The Selecter byli ve své době výjimeční nejen výbušnou směsí jamajského ska a britského punku, ale také tím, že šlo o jednu z mála rasově i genderově integrovaných kapel. Texty Pauline Black se ostře vyjadřovaly k sexismu, rasismu a sociálním problémům tehdejší Británie.
